Revamp Your Snacking Habits: The Best Healthy Snacks to Try
COVID Snacks No More: The Importance of Healthy Snacking
See, the thing is, during this pandemic, COVID-19 has changed drastically more than world orders and regular life, it has also changed our snacking habits. Remember the endless TikTok baking tutorials, the DIY pizza night, and let's not forget the instant noodles. I mean, its comfort food, we needed it, right? The reality is, as much as they were comforting, many of these treats haven't been that kind to our waistlines or our overall health.
The importance of healthy snacking can't be overstressed. When chosen carefully, healthy snacks can provide an energy boost between meals and supply essential vitamins and minerals. There's a reason you feel drained when all you've had is junk - your body needs a balanced diet to function efficiently. Healthy, balanced snacks can help keep your metabolism active, help maintain weight, and keep our bodies running. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person in possession of a busy schedule is in want of a healthy snack.
Snacks vs Meals: The Snack Revolution
Customers are demanding healthier and more nutritious snacks. In other words, people are increasingly substituting traditional snacks with healthier options, and it's about time we joined the revolution. I am not saying you should ditch your meals altogether, but in our always on-the-go world, a quick granola bar might save your day. The level of nutrients supplied by this food can be compared to a complete meal.
The “snackification” of our meals has led to increased awareness about what we feed our bodies, meaning the food industry has responded by offering more options than ever before. Well, at least in my case, I'm not on a diet. I’m simply on a journey towards a healthier lifestyle. So, snack away my friends, but make it count!
Healthy Snacks: The Great Taste with Good Health
Let's be completely honest here, whenever someone mentions "healthy snacks", most people will think of fruits, veggie sticks, or even plain yogurt. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with these, but it's time we changed the narrative around healthy snacks. They can be tasty, fun, and yes, still healthy. There's a whole world of mouthwatering, nutritious bites waiting to be discovered.
You want to find the sweet spot between getting a great taste and not sacrificing good health. Some of my favorites include hummus and whole wheat pita, a cup of berries, whole-grain crackers and low-fat cheese, and homemade popcorn flavored with a sprinkle of nutritional yeast for a cheese-like flavor without the extra calories. And, believe it or not, dark chocolate! It has antioxidants and satisfies your sweet tooth, without a worry about the waistline!
Rolling up Your Sleeves: Making Your Healthy Snacks
You see, preparing a healthy snack isn't rocket science. It is as simple as picking whole foods that are low in sugar and high in protein and fiber. They keep you satisfied and help in keeping your blood sugar levels stable. Isn't that right, fellow Wellingtonians?
The critical aspect here is planning. Plan your snacks like you plan your meals. That way, you're never caught off guard. And when it comes to DIY healthy snacks, the world is your oyster. From kale chips to homemade energy balls to greek yogurt parfaits, you have countless, tasty, nutritious options. And if you're feeling adventurous, why not a DIY smoothie bowl? The key is to find what works for you, what you like, and then pack your fridge and pantry with these healthier alternatives.
I remember one time, I tried to make chia seed pudding for the first time. Let's just say it didn't quite turn out the way I expected. It was more like chia soup than pudding. Once I discovered the right ratio of liquid to chia seeds and experimented with my favorite toppings and flavorings, I nailed it! Chia pudding became my go-to breakfast or a snack, a story of triumph, isn't it? So get out there, experiment and find your snacking nirvana.
'A' for Effort: Start Slow, Dream Big
It’s not about overnight transformations or about depriving yourself of your favorite foods. It’s about making small, doable changes and creating a healthier relationship with food. Start with small changes like substituting a cookie with a piece of fruit or choosing yogurt over ice cream. Don't dismiss these small victories because they add up in the long run and create a significant impact.
One approach to try is the 'add, not subtract' principle. Instead of thinking about excluding foods from your diet, focus on including more nutritious foods. This way, you gradually displace the unhealthy foods with healthier alternatives without feeling like you're missing out. Remember, every step towards healthier eating is a step towards a healthier - and potentially happier - you.
Onward and Upward: Healthy Snacking is Lifelong
Take it from me, Vanessa, embarking on the journey to healthier snacking is not a passing phase or a diet plan, it is a lifelong commitment, and the benefits are worth it. By making healthier choices, you are investing in your bodies in the best possible way, not just for now, but for your future as well. In this age of information and choices, being uninformed or misled is simply not an option. So, be smart, choose wisely. Your body will thank you for it.
And always remember, that the Day One of your healthy snacking journey can be today, right now. You don't need a Monday or the 1st of January to make your start. You just need the right mindset and the passion to improve your life! So, who's ready to revamp their snacking habits? I know, I am!
